Clouds Hill, the Hamburg indie label around producer and author Johann Scheerer, has purchased the rights to the complete work of Wolf Biermann, which amounts to about 300 songs - with the aim of making his music accessible again. But this is not about an expansion of the label catalogue: Wolf and Pamela Biermann in close dialogue with Johann Scheerer have designed a plan to build a bridge from Biermann's work to the present time. The aim is to make this still relevant music, which in a crisis-ridden Europe is now more topical than ever, accessible to a wider audience for a renewable generation. So the Clouds Hill Studio in Hamburg is intensively working on various cover pieces, of which there will still be a lot to hear.
Wolf Biermann, witness and protagonist of a turbulent time, has always spoken loudly to express his criticism of the prevailing conditions - and now finds support in a young generation that is artistically characterised by the tone of the artist born in Hamburg in 1936, who moved to the GDR as a young man to because he cannot be censored there.
Biermann's relevance is evident not least in a currently large retrospective of the German Historical Museum, which makes it understandable how Biermann has always been a seismograph of his home country since his first artistic successes in the 1960s, through which his father was murdered in Auschwitz and to which he has always kept a split relationship.
Johann Scheerer sees it almost as imperative to make music that is also dedicated to a wide audience in an emancipatory sense - and to put it in a new spotlight through the ambitious cover project. In a time when Europe is plagued by wars and the political climate is also intensifying in Germany, this voice needs more than ever.
