"Even Love Should Have Its Limits" is an unusual title chosen by the Finnish folk duo Pauanne for their third album, Joku Raja Rakkaudessakin. "We came across this phrase during an online discussion about refugees," share Kukka Lehto and Tero Pennanen. "It made us pause: Isn't love, by definition, supposed to be open and tolerant? Yet, today it seems there are boundaries even to our love. This album explores the contradictory nature of love in people's lives. In the past, oaths were made in the name of love, just as they are today. Yet, love was not always enough, especially when envy or strangers came into play. Although archival recordings show that the Finnish Baltic region was already multilingual and multicultural in the early 20th century, the fears and prejudices were strikingly similar to those we see today," explain Pauanne.

Pauanne focuses on Finnish and Karelian archival recordings, describing their style as "Underground Folk: making music with the voices of singers who have long since passed away." They update archival recordings from the last century, transforming them into contemporary folk songs with new lyrics and melodies. The album Joku Raja Rakkaudessakin centers on Finnish fears of diversity and clouded emotions, giving a voice to those marginalized by society.

"We have placed these archival recordings in a new context. The compositions are based on new stories we've developed from them, connecting these recordings with themes close to our hearts: community and tolerance. This makes the cultural heritage that the archives represent come alive and personal to us as musicians," write Pauanne.

In the album's song Pelkkä Persevä Neitsyt, a traditional exorcism spell to ward off an evil forest spirit is reinterpreted through the lens of the "Me Too" movement, giving it a feminist angle. The track Karjala addresses cultural appropriation, while Nyt alotan minä lauluain depicts an elderly man, drawn from the archival recordings, as a modern senior with memory issues, attempting to escape the harsh reality of his nursing home by dancing back into the past. Neiti-Heikki tackles prejudice against transgender people. The video for the track Onneni Tähdet reflects on the contradictory behavior of people who glorify those who went to war only to later shun them as marginalized veterans. This video was directed by renowned Estonian artist Robin Nõgisto.

Guest musicians on the album include Abdissa Assefa (percussion and programming), Senni Eskelinen (kantele), Janne Haavisto (drums), Karoliina Kantelinen (vocals), Oskari Lehtonen (percussion), Kaisa Leskinen (vocals), and Anssi Salminen (guitar).

Pauanne is a Finnish folk duo that has already made waves internationally, comprising violinist Kukka Lehto and keyboardist Tero Pennanen. Their debut album, released in 2019, won the Emma Award, the most prestigious honor in the Finnish music industry. In 2020, Pauanne released a joint album with actress and singer Irina Björklund, inspired by the television series Peacemaker, in which Björklund starred. Pauanne has also collaborated with visual artists, most recently in the feminist video artwork Pelkkä persevä neitsyt (translated: Just an Asshole as a Virgin) with Estonian artist Robin Nõgisto. The band has performed widely across Europe, including at the Womex and Womad festivals.
