Among the most successful Tin Pan Alley songwriters of the 1930s and 40s, Hoagy Carmichael (22nd November 1899 - 27th December 1981) was one of the principal architects of the Great American Songbook. He will be forever remembered for numbers like ‘Stardust’, ‘Georgia On My Mind’, ‘The Nearness of You’, ‘Heart And Soul’, ‘Lazybones’, ‘Skylark’ and ‘In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening’, the latter an Academy Award winner. Carmichael composed several hundred songs, including fifty that achieved hit record status during his lifetime. He also appeared as a character actor and musical performer in fourteen movies, hosted several musical-variety radio programmes, performed regularly on TV, and wrote two best-selling autobiographies. Inducted into the “Hollywood Walk Of Fame” in February 1960, in 1971 he was also inducted into the “Songwriters’ Hall Of Fame” as one of its initial ten inductees.
